Event Date:

Description:

New Jersey’s finest, Mike Simonetti [Italians Do It Better], will be sprinkling his diamond disco dust over Hong Kong on February 24, taking XXX Gallery through a guided tour of NYC’s legendary underground club scene - think rollerskates, voguing and mohawks. Stattus Soundsystem’s own Simon Pang and Casey Anderson will brush the glitter off their best dance tunes to round out a full night of handbags-on-the-floor dancing. Entrance is $180 before 11pm or $250 after. XXX Gallery is bring-your-own-booze only, located at Basement Floor, Fui Nam Building, 212 Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan. Mike Simonetti is an underground force in the music world. A behind-the-scenes wizard, outside his long-term DJ residencies in New York City, he's best known as the head of the Italians Do It Better record label, which re-ignited the Italo Disco explosion with its ‘After Dark’ compilation and releases from the likes of Glass Candy and Chromatics. His 2011 debut album Capricorn Rising is a melted down medal from his twenty-plus years in house and disco, a journey through disco lead by dark 80s synths, ending up somewhere between Lindstrøm, Joy Division and acid house. His music and ear for the sounds of the future has earned blessings of approval from Pitchfork to Karl Lagerfeld. Before he was an international disco star, Mike Simonetti was a punk rocker in gritty New Jersey, starting his first record label, Troubleman Unlimited, in the mid-90s. Even today, that label's list of releases reads like a who's-who of the American indie world, from twee pop to noisy post-punk: Camera Obscura, Zola Jesus, James Murphy, Black Dice, The Album Leaf, to name a few. Between his obsessive collection of rare and classic disco and funk, and his knack of recognising ahead-of-their-time artists, his legendary retro-futuristic DJ sets have crowds never wanting the party to end.
