Lamma Fisherfolk's Village 南丫島漁民文化村
Submitted by Fili on Tue, 2011-08-16 04:03From Frommer's:
Incidentally, as you dine, you'll notice Hong Kong's largest fleet of fish-breeding rafts in the harbor, some also supporting family homes. Also in the harbor is Lamma Fisherfolk's Village (tel. 852/2982 8585; www.fisherfolks.com.hk), which you might want to visit if you're looking for something to do or simply want to support a worthwhile local endeavor. Reached by shuttle from Sok Kwu Wan's public pier (the same pier where the ferry docks), the floating "village" consists of moorings, fish-breeding rafts, and displays relating to local fisher-folk culture, including fishing tools, implements used to craft traditional junks, model boats, clothing, and more. Most interesting is the authentic 60-year-old junk, which you can explore at leisure, peeking into the boat's tiny sleeping quarters, the kitchen with its wood-burning stove, and even the "outhouse" toilet. It's open daily from 10am to sunset. Admission, including the shuttle boat to and from the village, is HK$40 (US$5.20/£2.60) for adults and HK$30 (US$3.90/£1.95) for children and seniors.

Peng Chau Island
Submitted by Fili on Fri, 2010-11-05 08:28From the HK tourism board :
Peng Chau island is small enough that you can walk around and never get lost! About a third of the size of neighbouring Cheung Chau, and linked to its neighbours by an inter-island ferry service, Peng Chau has many of the bigger island's charms, but on a more intimate scale. These include an attractive fishing harbour, a two-centuries-old Tin Hau Temple, a morning fish market and a small community whose warren of lanes reveals many aspects of traditional rural life. Hand-painted porcelain is a true cottage industry here.
For a pleasant walk through the village and surrounding hills, visitors can follow the sign-posted Family Trail. Afterwards, fresh seafood can be bought at the old pier and taken to nearby restaurants to be cooked. If time permits, visitors might like to board a local kaido ferry at the old pier for the short channel trip to Lantau Island's peaceful hilltop Trappist monastery.
A small island, for very short hiking trips and local village life. Take a 20 min ferry from central HK.

Kowloon Walled City Park
Submitted by Fili on Thu, 2010-01-21 21:21From the official website:
The Kowloon Walled City Park occupies one of the most historic sites in the territory. Once strategically located at the north-eastern corner of the Kowloon peninsula and adjacent to what was to become Kowloon Bay, the site was used by imperial officials in the 15th century and was first fortified in 1668 when a signal station was established there. About 1810, a small fort was built at the head of the beach which then adjoined the site. The importance of the area to China's maritime defences grew sharply following the British occupation of Hong Kong Island in 1841. Between 1843 and 1847 a walled garrison-city was constructed. Massive stone walls with six watchtowers and four gates enclosed the area, which measured about 6.5 acres.
